The research group Virtual Theatre is part of the Research Centre for Theatre Making Processes, at the Faculty of Theatre, Utrecht School of the Arts Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Our research group is interested in the interplay between creative making processes and interactive digital technology. Especially in the rehearsal phase of a theatre making process. This interplay is studied form two perspectives; the interface and mixed reality. For this research we combine theory and practise through quick prototyping principles, ideas and hypothesizes are tested in practical setups and projects. In these projects we look at three aspects; person, proces and product.
The Research Centre for Theatre Making Processes initiates and produces many activities, projects and publication. By combining theory and practice expertise and knowledge is gathered to translate into educational frameworks and didactic methods.
The Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) offers preparatory courses, bachelor’s and master’s programs and research degrees in fine art, design, music, theatre, media, games and interaction and arts management. Utrecht School of the Arts is one of the largest art and culture-oriented institutes in Europe.
Joris Weijdom is a researcher, 3D computer animator and teacher at Design for Virtual Theatre and Games (DVTG) department of the faculty of Theatre of the HKU. Within the Research Centre Theatre Making Processes he is head of the research group Virtual Theatre, and founder and leader of the Media & Performance LAB (MAPLAP) at the HKU.
Nirav Christophe, is head of the research centre ‘Theatre Making Processes’ of the Faculty of Theatre at the Utrecht School of the Arts, concentrating on the interdisciplinarity, the interactivity and the polyvocality of the creative process. Being a writer for performance himself, he is an renowned creative writing lecturer and educationalist, focussing on the pedagogy of playwriting.
Assitant head is Henny Dörr, leader of the Research Group Scenography and Site-specific Theatre. Also head of the scenography department of the faculty of Theatre of the HKU.
